For the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo developed and published Super Mario Odyssey[b] in 2017. It is a game in the Super Mario series that follows Mario and his new friend Cappy as they travel through several kingdoms to free Princess Peach from Bowser's intentions for a forced marriage. Cappy is a sentient hat that enables Mario to manipulate other people and items. The game returns to the predominantly open-ended, 3D platform gameplay found in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, in contrast to the linear gameplay of earlier titles.
The game was started by Nintendo's Entertainment Planning and Development branch in 2013, not long after Super Mario 3D World was released. The development team chose to use a sandbox-style of gameplay to include all the different concepts that were put up during the process. The team created Super Mario Odyssey to appeal somewhat more to the series' core fans as opposed to earlier entries like New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 3D Land, which were intended towards a more casual audience. The voiced theme songs "Jump Up, Super Star!" and "Break Free (Lead The Way)" are also included in the game.
With the intention of forcing her into marriage, Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach from the Mushroom Kingdom and transports her on his airship. Mario, who is also on board, tries to save her, but after a brief struggle, Bowser's hat knocks him off the ship and he lands in the nearby Cap Kingdom. Bowser stomps on Mario's cap and lets it float towards the ship's rear propellers, where it is torn to bits. Mario is now gone. Cappy, one of the intelligent Bonneters that inhabit the Cap Kingdom, grabs a piece of the hat. When they first meet, he tells Mario that Bowser also abducted Tiara, his sister, to be used as Peach's bridal tiara. In the form of Mario's cap, Cappy joins Mario and grants him the power to throwfight.
